Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) describe disorders that involve chronic inflammation of digestive tract .This is categorized into 2 types:-

  1. Ulcerative colitis which is a long lasting inflammation and sores in innermost lining of colon and rectum.
  2. Crohn’s disease is a inflammation of lining in digestive tract which is often spread deep into affected tissues.

These two involve some common symptoms like Severe diarrhea, Rectal bleeding, Severe internal cramps / muscle spasms in the region of pelvis, Abdominal pain, Fatigue, Weight loss, Anemia etc.

IBD also sometimes leads to life threatening complications like colon cancer, skin , eye , and joint inflammation , blood clots in vein and arteries etc .

Cause:- The actual cause is unknown but possible causes include weak immune system, Hereditary, Non steroidal anti inflammatory medications , Cigarette smoking, diets high in fat, refined foods..etc.,

Diagnosis is usually confirmed by biopsies on colonoscopy . Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory diseases, and are not medically curable. However , ulcerative colitis can be cured in most cases by protocolectomy , although this may not eliminate extra-intestinal symptoms.

Deficiency in vitamins, essential fatty acids, minerals like magnesium, zinc and selenium are extremely common causes in IBD . Replacing these deficiencies with healthy diets like including certain low fiber diet , low FODMAP diet ( consists in global restriction of all fermentable carbohydrates) can help to deal the chronic deficiency condition.

Avoiding dairy products, quiting smoking and leading a stressfree life can help to minimize the condition to large extent. People with IBD should maintain a diverse and nutrient rich diet with some Healthy life style choices like having plenty of fluids , eating healthy foods, maintaining adequate calorie intake ,and exercising .
