Yoga helps in curing and/ or controlling many chronic and pathological conditions like Hypertension, Hypothyroidism, Migraine, Asthma, Diabetes and many more that relaxes Body Mind and Soul.
Yoga is a series of Physical, Mental, Spiritual practices, originated in ancient India over 5000 years ago.
Yoga involves various body postures, and movements (Asanas), breathing technics (Pranayamas) and different types of Meditation which are designed to promote Physical comfort and Mental peace.
Causes of Diabetes & its treatment through Yoga asanas:
Diabetes Mellitus, commonly referred as “Diabetes”, is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. This may be due to defect in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both.
1.Pancreas/Endocrine:Functioning as an endocrine gland, the pancreas secretes the hormones insulin and glucagon to control blood sugar levels throughout the day.
2.Hyperglycaemia/ Diabetic Acidosis:- Hyperglycaemia, or high blood sugar is a condition in which excess amount of Glucose is in the blood plasma. Diabetic Acidosis is a condition in which the body produces high levels of blood acids, called Ketones. Both conditions occur in absence of Insulin, or absence of Insulin action..
Ardha Matsyendrasana: This posture, makes the entire spine twist, enhancing the visceral organs blood circulation, thus helping in gentle massage to the Pancreas too which will help in regulation of Insulin secretion.
Manduksasana: This posture makes you keep fists of both the hands on the either side of your belly button (Naval), that helps in internal organ blood circulation including Pancreas.
3.Kidneys/Excretory System: In this condition the filtering units of Kidney don’t function well, and thus eliminates protein in the urine called Proteinurea, the sign that kidney has lost its ability to eliminate waste products
Dhanurasana: This postures helps in contraction of the back (kidneys are located between the transverse processes of T12- L3 vertebrae) giving some gentle massage to the Kidneys, Pancreas and Liver.
Pashchimotansana: This postures squeezes the abdominal muscles due to which it helps in stimulating Kidneys, and improves digestion aiding to Constipation too.
4.Blood vessels/Circulatory system:
Atherosclerosis- It’s a condition in which arteries (blood vessels) are hardened due to the prolonged deposition of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances found in blood.
Vajrasana: This posture helps in increasing the blood circulation in the lower limb, and thus with regular practice the lower limbs are not painful anymore.
Balasana: This posture is similar to Vajrasana, bending forward gives nice stretch on the back and pressure on the abdomen, massaging the visceral organs.
Having said the benefits of certain Asanas in case of Diabetes, there are many other Asanas which can help to control the blood sugar level and help reduce the Stress hormones, which interrupts with the Insulin Action, like, Gomukhasana, Halasana, Mayurasana, Vakrasana, Setubandhasana. Along with Asanas, practicing Pranayama and Meditation will also help in improving overall health.
Control/ cure of Diabetes is possible only with complete Lifestyle change, which should include a Balanced/ Healthy Diet and strict Yoga regime. After all , including Yoga practice in daily routine is not only for the treatment purpose, it must be part of one’s Lifestyle which will eventually help prevent the occurring of other health related problems too.
